PMA stands against police and police violence

Today and every day, Princeton Mutual Aid asserts what should be self-evident: Black lives matter. We stand in solidarity with the individuals and organizations around the country protesting ongoing attacks on black lives. These protests call for justice in the murders of black individuals including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee, Ahmaud Arbery, and Nina Pop -- at the hands of police and an America that dehumanizes people of color.

These recent protests are also a response to the systemic ways that white supremacy leads to anti-Black violence in policing, education, housing, and healthcare. Such violence has occurred for 400 years since slavery, and continues to occur, in the town of Princeton and state of New Jersey. Data from 2012-2016 showed a Black person was 493% more likely to be arrested in Princeton than a white person, and 57% more likely to have force used on them. As a mutual aid organization, PMA strives to build a network of neighbor-to-neighbor support that ideally makes policing obsolete.

As a group of Princeton neighbors working together, we reaffirm our commitment to:

  1. Uniting individuals and local organizations, of all identities and backgrounds, to meet one another’s needs and build collective power

  2. Fostering anti-racism internally through continued self-evaluation and learning,

  3. Supporting anti-racist work in New Jersey

  4. Amplifying the work of Black community leaders.
